The "Northern Route" is comprised of numerous collaborative partners working together to make your visit to South Dakota enjoyable and memorable experience. |
(Continued From Home Page) It is a land that was home to the Arikara, Mandan, Hidatsa, and various Sioux tribes whose history and culture is preserved and alive today through generations of tradition that is on display for you to experience. It is a land that was explored first by French trappers and later by the legendary Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806. Their exploits and adventures are just waiting for you to share and enjoy through artifacts, interpretive displays, historic sites, and celebrations and festivals all along the route. You can explore Fort Sisseton, a unique military outpost established in 1864 and experience the fort come alive with cavalry, trappers, native arts, crafts, and dance; wild west characters, the culture, song and dances of the early settlers, and cuisine from various cultures at their annual festival in June. Visit Sica Hollow, one of the most serene, magical, and sacred places on earth were beauty and wildlife live in harmony with the whispering voices of those who were there before us dancing on the winds. Visit the communities all along the route established by settlers of many European cultures and traditions who followed America's, and the railroad's push west, and the communities of the Sisseton-Wahpeton , Standing Rock , and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe's Reservations. Learn of the hardships, the conflicts, the heartbreaks, joy, and cooperation experienced between Europeans themselves and with the native cultures whose land they were moving upon through museums, events, activities, and community festivals throughout the year. Experience all of the richness and flavor of a “living, breathing” history as you travel on the “Northern Route” and into the Black Hills.
